In an effort to clearly identify the role it plays in the community, the Palm
Springs Neighborhood Involvement Committee (PSNIC) has, for the first time
since its inception, adopted a Mission Statement.
"The group's mission statement helps to define who they are and what they are
about,” said Lee Husfeldt, Director of Neighborhood and Community Relations.
“When new neighborhoods are considering organizing, this Mission Statement
will give them a better idea of where the committee has set its sights. I
particularly appreciate that the committee wants to fortify existing and new
neighborhood organizations."
As adopted, the mission of the PSNIC is:
- to serve as a collective voice in expressing issues of mutual interest of Palm Springs Neighborhood Organizations
- to work with City staff and elected officials to develop solutions and responses to matters of mutual interest of Palm Springs Neighborhood Organizations
- to strengthen the system of neighborhood involvement by providing tools and resources to existing and newly forming Palm Springs Neighborhood Organizations
- to provide opportunities, processes and communication channels that help Palm Springs Neighborhood Organizations empower citizens to become active participants in securing and enhancing the safety, ecology, character, and enjoyment of their neighborhood environment.
“It helps the members of the PSNIC realize the significance and the importance
of the organization,” said John Williams, chair of the PSNIC. “It crystallizes the
priorities and puts them down on paper.”
There are currently 15 officially recognized groups associated with the City’s
Office of Neighborhood Involvement (ONI). Established by City Ordinance in
April 2005, the ONI is a vehicle for encouraging citizen involvement in service
delivery and improving communication among citizens, City staff and elected
officials.
The PSNIC works with the City Manager and staff to address matters of
concern to citizens and other neighborhood interests. The PSNIC is comprised of
elected representatives of Neighborhood Organizations that have become
officially recognized by the City through an application process.
