Palm Springs N.I.C. plans Picnic, Expo for May 10th 2008

The Palm Springs Neighborhood Involvement Committee is planning a picnic and expo Saturday, May 10, for everyone who lives within the City’s 17 neighborhood organizations, plus the five neighborhoods that are planning to join the program.

“One of the major benefits of a neighborhood organization is the social aspect,” said Lee Husfeldt, the City’s Director of Neighborhood and Community Relations. “We encourage people to get to know their neighbors, and with the picnic, we’re hoping they’ll meet some of the wonderful people who live in other neighborhoods as well.”

The picnic and expo will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, May 10, in Ruth Hardy Park. There will be a complimentary BBQ lunch and a line-up of musical performances including the Ajalon Missionary Baptist Church Choir and local artist Nancy Franklin. Nacho Libro will tell stories to the children who will also be able to meet the Palm Springs Power mascot, Rocky the Ram.

“The expo part of the picnic has really taken hold with many different organizations participating,” Husfeldt said.

The Palm Springs Public Library will be there giving out new library cards, and representatives from many of the utility companies that serve the community will be on hand with energy-saving information. Palm Springs Disposal Company will also be at the expo with information on the new single-stream recycling program.

There will be information about plans for a new animal shelter and people from the shelter will be at the expo doing pet identification micro chipping for $15. Neighbors may bring their dogs and cats if they’d like them to receive a micro chip, which helps reunite lost pets with their owners.

Not to upstage the household pets at the picnic, but the Palm Springs Police Department will have one of its K9s demonstrate its skills. And the Fire Department will set up the Incident Command Vehicle for people to tour.

Volunteers from Citizens On Patrol, Police Advisory Board, Citizens Police Academy and Community Emergency Response Team will be at the expo providing information and encouraging people to get involved.

“The picnic and expo is an excellent opportunity for the residents of Palm Springs to come together, meet each other, and learn valuable information about available City services,” said John Williams, Chair of the Palm Springs Neighborhood Involvement Committee. “This first annual picnic and expo is another example of the commitment of City Hall to the residents of our City. That makes me proud to live in Palm Springs.”
