Sustainability Expo Friday

Two Palm Springs neighborhood organizations are hosting a Sustainable Neighborhoods Expo Friday focusing on home ecology and conservation.

The expo is being planned by the Tahquitz River Estates and Warm Sands Neighborhood Organizations. The two neighborhoods are adjacent to each other on the south side of Palm Springs. They are two of the 21 neighborhood organizations that belong to the City's Office of Neighborhood Involvement and are members of the Palm Springs Neighborhood Involvement Committee (PSNIC).

The expo will be held from 1 to 7 p.m., Friday, June 27, at 750 Calle Palo Fierro, the site of Cocotero, a 12-unit condominium development that was awarded the highest Energy Star rating for any multi-family development in California. Cocotero is in the Tahquitz River Estates Neighborhood Organization (TRENO) and will receive one of five awards handed out by TRENO during the reception, which is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.

"The new Cocotero development is a model of energy efficiency and smart growth that we are proud to welcome to the neighborhood and our City," said April Hildner, former chairwoman of the TRENO.

During the reception, Mayor Steve Pougnet is scheduled to discuss the Palm Springs Path to Sustainability project. Taking its cue from the City Council, who have made sustainability a priority, the Palm Springs Neighborhood Involvement Committee created its own Ecology Subcommittee earlier this year.

Friday, the entire Cocotero complex will be turned into an earth-friendly exhibit.  There will be information on energy and water conservation, recycling, household hazardous waste disposal, Smart Growth and Shop Local concepts, solar energy, bike and pedestrian pathways, and the future Tahquitz Creek Nature Trail. People can also step aboard SoCal Edison's Mobile Energy Unit to learn energy and money saving tips, Energy Star purchasing information and more. Desert Water Agency and Palm Springs Disposal Services will take part in the expo along with other agencies and organizations.

All displays will be indoors Friday, so people shouldn't be deterred by the weather. More information about the expo is available by calling 760.832.6695.
